"What is Satire?": A Literary Guide for English Students and Teachers

"What is satire? How can we understand various kinds of literary satires?" Professor Evan Gottlieb answers these questions using examples of satire from a variety of historical and contemporary sources. The short video is designed to help high school and college English students to properly identify three different kinds of satire (Horatian, Juvenalian, and Menippean) and to analyze this genre's structures and purposes.
The video is sponsored by the School of Writing, Literature, and Film at Oregon State University. For more discussions of literary forms and essay writing tips, please subscribe to the free SWLF ISpulse Channel or visit liberalarts.oregonstate.edu/wlf.

Thanks for the question! We haven't watched the full video (things are pretty hectic around here), but from what we watched, it certainly is making a good point about how cruise advertisements--and indeed quite a few other media forms--characterize whiteness as a "norm" that is indirectly (or sometimes directly) exclusionary. To make it a Juvenalian satire, however, it'd probably have to be told from the perspective of a person who seems to hold these beliefs (the narrator in Jonathan Swift's satire "A Modest Proposal" is advocating for eating children and in Fight Club, the narrator is celebrating masculine violence). Satire therefore requires us to separate out in our heads the author (who does not hold these beliefs and is in fact condemning them by presenting an extreme version of those beliefs) from the narrator. This is tougher to do with two people in the given video, because each of them hold different beliefs, so it might be unclear to the viewer where the satire falls--on the interviewer or the interviewee. That's our two cents. We hope it proves useful to you!
