I do not dispute that these are useful tips for learning another language. But, unless you are unusually adept at learning foreign languages, I do dispute that you will become fluent in a second language within six months using these, or any other tips. Even his tips are self-contradictory. Avoid immersion, but surround yourself with the language you want to learn? Children, whose brains are perfectly adapted to Learning language, because they have not yet lateralized I to right brain left brain functions, take far longer than six months to learn to speak their own language Despite unknowingly employing all these tips. I have conscientiously applied myself to learning several languages, including living in the country‘ whose slanguage I sought to learn, Employing a native tutor, surrounding myself with the sights and sounds of the target language, and studying every day, I have never come close to fluency in another language in so short a time. If this were indeed possible for the average bloke, Government foreign language programs for it’s diplomats and intelligence officers would be much shorter than they are now. Presumably, they know what they’re doing because they’ve been doing it for a lot longer than this guy. So kudos to this gentleman for his innate ability to learn a foreign language. But I am not convinced that this is an achievable goal for the average person.

It's not because people can't learn a second language as adults, it's the attention spam made us hard to focus on something and have the capability to learn and reflect and stay focused for 6 months. Learning is mostly about persistence and determination.

this man is right. when i was 15, i started learning english in an english course. 6 months later i started being a tourist guide after school and most of my guests didn't believe that i just learned english for six months that time. another story 2 years ago, i quit working and went back to my hometown where i had no idea what to do there. then i was asked if i could develop a web based application for a government project and i said yes which was actually i knew nothing about web based apps. youtube helped me a lot that i could complete my job in two months and the result satisfied my client.

@Mel L my native language is Indonesian. my class was 3 times 90 minutes a week. in indonesia we had more than 12 subjects to learn at school that time. but i focused only on the subjects i was interested to. English, physics and math were my favorite subjects so i focused on those 3. for the English lesson, i mostly learned by listening to english 900, a cassette to train my listening comprehension and conversation skills. but i didn't force myself in learning english. i tried studying as relax as possible. the rest, i just reviewed my notes from the course once in a while, watched english movies and news programs, memorizing words (about 5-10 words a day), tried to think in english. that's it.

Please let me if I should consider learning whether the vocabulary or the grammar of such arduous language. Your suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thank you and have a beautiful day.

The US State Department has 70 years experience training government staff to learn languages as efficiently as possible, and at the end be able to proficiently use it, both written and speaking ability. They rate languages according to level of difficulty for an English speaker, and the required time it takes. Check out Foreign Language Training on their web site. The time required for Italian is 24 weeks as opposed to either Chinese language, 88 weeks. That is five hours a day, five days a week for two years (allowing a few pauses). Would it be faster if one lives in the particular country? Of course. But six months compared to two years? I don't think so. Italian, on the other hand does work out to six months if studied the same hours per day. They go by average ability. It's also faster if it's a third or fourth language, as the first "second" language is a handful and they get progressively easier. So, is this guy correct? He's partially correct. It depends on the language. And you can definitely speed up the process by being forced to use it. I would bet the State Department is on to this by now. It's probably incorporated into their curriculum. In the end, to become fluent takes a lot of work.

Great talk, I started speaking 1 hour of French every day with a native speaker, and I am sure I can get there even faster than 6 months at this point! Aiming for 3 months, using these principals and modeling the language learning process of others who learn quickly can give incredible results! This is for real, no excuses to not try learning now :)
