About how inbreeding would be the main reason why this creatures wouldn't existed there is one big hole about it: Who said that was the only cave with "falmers"? (Skyrim reference). We already know they do go out for hunt, so is not that farfetch'd to think this is how they met other crawlers.

The poster is a reference to a Salvador Dali's "In Voluptas Mors." It was a group of naked women posed to resemble a skull. It was placed on the back of the moth on the poster for "Silence of the Lambs." The poster for "Descent" is a reference to that picture as well, but the women are clothed.

The book Decent was way better followed up with The Ascent aaaand was so much more complex. The crawlers were a separate species of humans troglofauna hominids or hadels. The movie deviates from the book it’s essentially its own film if you like the movie read the books.

The reason that inbreeding causes problems is that a genetic bottleneck allows randomness to dominate the genepool. What I mean is, it's easier for a gene to reach fixation in a population of 30 than in a population of 30,000 due to random chance alone. If the genes are detrimental it's bad for the organisms; if they're beneficial (and remember, those terms are based on the local environment) it can lead to much faster rates of adaptation than in normal populations. The problem with adaptation is that it only gets you to local fitness maxima, at which point any change must necessarily reduce your fitness. Natural selection tends to keep you at the first maxima you reach, whether or not it's actually the optimal solution to the problems of your environment. Randomness--which again increases in importance as population size declines--tends to kick you off those maxima, allowing a population to reach new maxima. There's a reason that new species generally arise within a small population of an existing species, rather than the whole species evolving at once (though the latter does happen, it's called a chronospecies). Also remember: It's speculated that fruit flies in the Hawaiian Islands evolved as one pregnant female went from one island to the next. A single female laid eggs and started a new species not just once, but repeatedly. Further, it's unlikely that the movie showed the entire population of crawlers. Humans just don't work like that. We tend to send hunters out away from home to get meat, and to defend our homes. We take a very dim view of other species attacking our children. So it's likely that we're only seeing the hunters/warriors of this tribe. It's estimated that a primitive society can only keep 1 in 10 members as warriors before the cost of war becomes too burdensome on the society. So if we see 9 crawlers, and we assume that those spelunkers were considered a great enough threat to warrant all hunters attacking, we're looking at a population of 90 to 100 individuals, above the lowest limit for a viable population. If we assume that these spelunkers weren't considered an all-hands-on-deck threat, the number could be much higher. It's worth bearing in mind that humans have lived in cave cities in the past. Usually this is due to invasion--such as would be experienced by a hominin species when H. sapiens moved in. Such a group would be very hesitant about letting H. sapiens meander through its homes, so it's almost certain that we aren't seeing the full extent of the crawler society here. We're seeing the hunters/warriors, not the mothers, the farmers, the rulers, and the children.

Actually, the problem you pointed out isn't much of a problem. Sure, 1 cave could not support a minimum viable population, but why would it only be 1 cave? I could easily see the crawlers occupying 3 or 4 caves. There are other, much bigger problems. The first is that they still get most of their food by hunting on the surface, so they would totally still have vision(because they would be using it to hunt). If anything, their vision would improve due to their tendency to hunt at night. There is a bigger problem though. The only way they could exist without us noticing is if their population where neither growing nor shrinking(if it where growing, their population would expand until we noticed, if it where shrinking, they would not exist for long). This seems very dubious for tool using hominids, especially in a world where their predators have been systematically driven to extinction by humans. Also, they totally would get infected by a human disease and all die.

SPOILER TO THE MOVIE LATER BELOW no no no... how do you know this enclave of mole-men is the only one? They might be living in clans of 5-15 humans each, just like humans did. This does not mean the total population is 5-15, there could be multiple enclaves. It is never shown that the explorers really saw 100% of the cave system. Also in the end of the second movie the "guide" shovels the sole survivor. WHY? Because he is somehow allied or aligned to those creatures. He might even have killed the deer for them and dropped it towards the hole. Many things in the movie remain unexplained. So maybe they do NOT hunt outside. And maybe there are even more people around in the wilderness who "feed" and support these creatures.
