Here in 2020, despite the eerie accuracy of a lot of the presentation, it's hard not to think that the "engine" technology that Tom hypothesizes in this talk...well, it seems to have slammed into a wall. AI and machine learning is good, it's even great...but it's not that great. It tricks itself into believing all sorts of nonsense, it ties itself into useless, helpless knots...it can do very specialized tasks well but doesn't seem to be able to stretch itself across conceptual gaps no matter how much raw data you throw at it. I'm not saying that his view of 2030 is wrong...I mean, we have ten years to find out. But my sense, six years later, is that the promise, and the terror, of big data and machine learning were a little bit like the promise and the terror of nuclear power in the 1940s. It seems that the real world is more complicated than our worst nightmares were able to account for.

@Lulu AGK Really? Whether you're talking about Google Glass world overlays or virtual reality headsets, neither has reached mass adoption (and I don't think they ever will) plus they're hardly revolutionary. The former is just a more limited, less convenient smartphone and the latter is an overhyped, overpriced gaming accessory. Nanotech I know nothing about. What's going on in that space?

    2. Lulu AGK

Nano tech and augmented reality is next but then again we have been hearing that for years now and nothing really big perfected, that we've seen anyway.

Privacy is just a concept that was developed out of insecurity and mistrust of fellow common folk. “Omg im slightly kinky, when anyone knows i will be the outcast.” *privacy vanishes* “50% of the world is kinky. Oh” (this is just an example topic) thats the focus of privacy i notice here. I think the worse issue is that the data is used by corporations to replace us, the common folk. Companies seek to make us redundant. The super rich make people more and more useless by automatization. And if we are useless and have nothing to bargain with, our rights will slowly fade, proportionally to what we deserve. Because if we have nothing to give, then what do we even deserve?
