Thanks a lot for the update. I'm dealing with IT security and it drove me mad when I saw your original video. Yes, there is one and only one reason to use commercial VPNs: if you want to hide your origin behind a router in a certain country. We use that for quality or geo testing of our web sites. But China is a good example as well as TV streaming. But doing evil things over a VPN is even stupider than just using your ISP.

Or just have an internet connection in a dorm/school/company whose sysadmins are on a power trip and block out social media/mail/banking or even sites you need to complete your coursework which has happened to me. Luckily I already had vpn because they had previously blocked torrents.

@James Trello Free usually means shitty speeds, and it didn't cost much, about 5 euros for 3 months when split with my two roommates, and more convenient as it's just one program you need to run.

I have suspicions that any VPN service allowed into China has been compromised by it's gov. They've already banned most of them, why not ban the rest then? Maybe it's because they're compromised, hmmm? Anyway, if you actully want to circumvent their firewall while also having privacy, then use Tor with the meek-azure bridge.

(3:45) If I'm not mistaken. All traffic that goes across the Swedish border is logged. So if you as a Swede, uses a foregin VPN, all your traffic is still logged. If you use a VPN in Sweden as a Swede, the VPN traffic is logged, but you don't get the benefit of connecting from a foregin country.

the problem with ALL VPNs is nothing they say they do to protect your privacy, can be verified its meaningless. except perhaps for independent audits never heard of anyone doing that though, if theres issues with VPN it will be due to them being cheapskate or lazy and taking shortcuts or not doing things correctly

Sure you can use a VPN for that, or you could use a proxy (or proxy chain) and not pay anything. And if you want actual privacy while torrenting, you should use I2P based torrents.

    1. James Trello
      James Trello
      5 dögum síðan

If you are using encrypted websites, then your ISP can see the metadata from your connections (who are you connecting to, at what port, etc.) If you are using unencrypted sites, then they can see everything you send. Also, VPNs won't protect you from this, a VPN would still see exactly what the ISP sees; you're only moving the problem, not fixing it. Use Tor instead, as Tor allows for actual privacy.
