In this video we want to talk about one of the strongest predictors of how happy people are, how easily they make friends and how good they are at dealing with hardship. An antidote against dissatisfaction so to speak: Gratitude.

    Ohai! For a change a few personal words. My name is Philipp and I started this channel almost seven years ago - you don’t know my voice but you have heard my words because I write most of our scripts. Oh boy. This was a hard video to make. Gratitude felt vaguely risky to do as a topic. It has this aura of cheap Instagram hashtag self help stuff. Some of you will hate this video deeply, and the thought of that made me pretty anxious writing it. Gratitude was not supposed to be a video topic originally. Just like the Nihilism and Loneliness videos, the script was based on personal struggles and part of the process of dealing with them. And so it felt right to make gratitude a video too. But Kurzgesagt is not a self help channel, so we'll keep this sort of content at roughly one or two per year. We hope they are helpful to some of you. If you care for my take on how to practice Gratitude, we made a Kurzgesagt Gratitude journal to combine the science with practical tips. shop.kurzgesagt.org/ Edit: PRE-ORDER is available again.       I have a very scientific approach to life and self-improvement, and it's over two year I keep a gratitude diary. So... spot on, Kurzgesagt and Philipp! But I understand your reticence about not looking like a self-help channel. I think that, as long as you cite your scientific resources (published papers, etc), at least in the description, you are on the safe side.

    I know that most of the unreligious people will gonna bash me but Catholicism really help me to become satisfied at simple and humble things. Yeah, the world offers us a lot of things and giving us a lot of material wealth that will gonna turn to dust tomorrow. No material thing really satisfies me. There's something supernatural around us that we constantly search but we always failed to find it. Praying and meditation really helps to combat dissatisfaction as we offer ourselves to Jesus. :-)

    Okay but how do we destroy the egotistical worrying about falling into being a conformist? This is something I struggle with. The "wanting more and better" part. Because yeah, we should be grateful we have something (or even someone), but can't fully appreciate it (or love them) because we know it can always be better. Same for our jobs / economical status. Progress or even "growth" is also defined as growing financially or upscaling our position in society. How about those people who are ambitious? I try to tell myself that what's meant to be it will be, but how much of someone's will vs faith (destiny) is the manifestation of life?

    7:36 yo this sounds arbitrary, but it actually works. Journaling ONLY the good things that happen to me has helped me feel more content. These good things happening being: Showering Cleaning my room Eating a wholesome meal Practicing the violin Spending time with family Working in all my free periods at school All little things that mean a lot to me I suppose next is focusing on things others did for me: Dad drove me to school today Mum made me a sandwich for breakfast in a situation where because i had gotten up late I'd have been even mor late to school otherwise My sister introduced me to a really good tick tock video I showed erhu music to my sister which she enjoyed All this teaches you to put importance on on things you do for yourself, what others do for you and what you do for otherd

    "a lot of self products that implies that is your fault for not working hard on yourself enough" oh my god.... so true. I recently found myself saying that i was a failure for apliying to just 3 jobs and getting cero response from them. I even said that i wasted my time and defraud my parents for making them paid for my education... my god this is fucking stupid. Jesus christ, self steem is a stupid lie that never ends and doesn´t do anything for our sanity. It's always there to remind your mind, everytime you fail what happened was you weren´t "brave" or "hard working" or the worst one "confident" enough. What the fuck does that even mean, if i see a bunch a bullys of course my 12 ys me would not mess with them but me at 26 i will fucking tell them to stop and get the fuck out before i call the police on them, but if you place me right now in a highly competitive work of course i'm gonna fail. Then i guess i should "work on my confidence"... until my 35 -45 ys me finally has the willpower to survive in that shitty environment. When will i ever be free? I think i'm gonna ask myself this question a lot frequent Fuck self improvement! It helps but fuck you

    Several years ago I went to a anti depression course, where they reached out with different methods to beat depression. One of the things they taught was indeed to write down, or at least take time to think of positive things that happened during the day. Given its simplicity, and knowing I am a bright guy, I was very unconvinced this would work. Rather every fiber in my body scoffed at this. I reluctantly told the psych I would do the exercise, if only to show him it does not work. The most irritating thing of doing this exercise, especially the first few times, it that it did work for me. I really disliked something so simple actually worked so wel for the complex mindset I had. Other things, like meditation and relaxation exercises dit not do much for me. In fact, the only other thing truly worked for me, is finding a new hobby I could love to do. So now nearly each weekend, i go out in nature or to a zoo, to photograph wildlife or nature. Its outside, I get some mild exercise, Get dome sunlight to convert to Vitamine D. And if i feel a case of the blues coming up? yes, i start recollecting positive things happening to me again. Because it freaking works.

    These gratitude and lonlieness videos felt exceptionally well made though, so i am gratefull for all the work you put into these. date 12018, 12019 nice :D A video suggestion: Wim Hof Breathing and the bodies ability to heal, cause lately there were a few nobel prizes in medicine won concerning research done around the wim hof method.     moral of this video: it is your fault for not working hard enough at it you ungrateful pile of shite. i do love when these type of videos set out to give non-generic advice and then end up giving generic advice.
