What Happened To Domino’s In Northern Europe?

CNBC

Iceland is a notoriously hard market for international fast-food chains to break into. Domino’s is the exception - the pizza chain has the biggest market share in fast food there. But that love for Domino’s doesn’t extend to the rest of the Nordic bloc. In October 2019, Domino’s Pizza Group, which owns stores in Iceland, Norway and Sweden, announced it’s exiting its business in those markets.

i no longer use my local domino's in the UK, last one i had was exceptionally poor quality burned and lacking toppings even though i paid extra for extra topping. the tomato base was almost non existent just a small patch in the center cheese was also missing completely. i now use pizza hut where i find the quality is very good and well provided for toppings wise. dominos is the worst pizza in my local area and they are losing custom due to their poor quality.

As a swede I think the largest reason Dominos did not work here apart from the wages is the fact that in every streetcorner here you can find your local pizzeria. It is the most common type of local resturant by far and it is with truckers resturants swedens only real comparision to a diner in the US. Kebab and pizza resturants are also usually the same resturant here, it is a staple of take away and hungover food.

Why don't they just do what they're doing in Singapore? Muslims. I think, unlike Singapore, in which brands which want to survive have to find a niche, the predominant plan is still to try to dominate. Frankly, Europe's Muslims do not have choices, and i believe this is where Domino's can target. There's no neeed to go for gold. Just target one, and grow that.

Comparing Icelanders to Scandinavians is a very dangerous business they have a completely different set of values and identity. Calling an Icelander Scandinavian is like an insult. As for why they haven’t done well in those other Scandinavian markets is fairly straight forward western chain restaurants are not viewed favourably in those countries. It’s seen as cheap, processed etc. The only way those markets take to chain brands is when they modulate their menus to local tastes. And I don’t mean one or two items I mean almost entirely. The majority of the customers in Nordic countries are going to be native people not those from America and Britain etc visiting. So you have to give people what they want and flatter their egos that you are bending your knee to their country and not trying to impose American tastes onto them. As for Iceland. The reason for the oddity is almost all of Iceland’s food is imported very little grows there. And so the mindset is they will go to the best in category for taste etc. So dominos must be the best in category in Iceland. As soon as someone comes along and makes a better tasting pizza for a better price it will be takk bless for dominos. And as soon as a competitor figures this out they are gonna have issues.

When it comes to Pizza in particular it can be true because when it comes to Pizzas the local resturants (Pizzerias) sells huge pizzas for a much lower price and they taste much better too... However, to say Swedes eats less fastfood over all (like mcdonalds for example) does not make much sence.

We were so used to eating a lot of dough, fatty foods while in Scandinavia it’s really healthy eating. I personally love that about Scandinavia. I also notice how my stomach can’t handle fatty foods anymore when I visit my family back in Southern Europe. I literally throw up because of it. Honestly living in Scandinavia, eating the good food, exercising...I feel quite healthy.

Domino's came to Scandinavia, and 20 years later they discovered that tey had to pay workers a decent wage ? Ridiculous. What happened is Domino's what shut down end of 2019 by the Danish Food Administration, because of rats and bad products !!! They suddenly got so bad a press in Scandinavia they had to shut down all scandinavian franchises. Hey CNBC, do your job !!!!!!

In Sweden, the main competition consists of the plethora of independent pizzerias all over the country, considered by many to be as much of an institution as the meatballs. That’s why pizza chains have a lot harder time competing there than chains in the other fast food categories (burgers, chicken, coffee, hot dogs, donuts, waffles, etc.). McDonalds and Burger King can still sustainability compete against Max and Sibylla. However, I would be surprised if Pizza Hut are faring much better there than Domino’s, as if I wasn’t surprised enough already to see them have a presence in Sweden in the first place. In Norway, Dolly Dimple started off in Sandnes, a small to medium (in local scale; population at the time: around 35000) town, and it took a while before they started expanding. At some point, investors with deep pockets bought the then largely local chain, and grew it too fast, with a desire to go nationwide as soon as possible, instead of growing the business at a more sustainable pace, allowing for time to improve routines. That’s what resulted in the inefficiency that Domino’s inherited when they bought the chain.

I live in Finland and for me ordering a pizza is an investment. Frozen pizza is 2-4€ depending on a quality Pizza from a kebab place is 7-10€ Pizza from a very good pizza place is 13-20€ Pizza from Pizza Hut (best I could think of to substitute Domino's) is 25-30€ for large pan with italian crust+ 3-5€ delivery aand Making pizza yourself 7- depends on what you put on there € So when there is just a simple craving it is easier to either buy frozen or make your own. When you are drunk, drinking or you woke up after drinking it is time for kebab pizza ( and they deliver until 5am in some places). Pizza at the dedicated pizza restaurant is for going out with friends. So why order Pizza Hut for the cost of weekly groceries or the price of 3 kebab place pizzas?

The answer is simple. In Sweden there is a different pizza shop every 5-10 blocks. Not to talk about, those pizzas are extremely better than regular pepperoni ones in the america which makes a dominos pizzeria a secondhand pizza for an abnormally, outrageous price. A giant company can't exist like that when they are not better in any way, shape or form. Especially since a lot of people I know, have their favourite pizzerias that they go to.

Those business analysts you at CNBC have spoken to have no clue what they're talking about. The only thing you got right in this video is we don't eat out as much as people do in the US, where dining out several times weekly, or even several times daily is normal, here most people dine out maybe a few times a month. We do however order loads of food for delivery or pickup, but Dominos make subpar pizzas, at a higher price, charge too much for delivery, and have a very american price structure designed to entice you to keep adding more to your order to get more discounts, making the price structure muddy, and that's very unattractive to scandinavians. To worsen their situation the other things offered besides the pizzas are not things people really desire that much, and even the few attractive items are of too low quality, the breads are all based on the same dough, the dough that's a big part of making the pizzas themselves subpar and unattractive. The bread part is in a way vewed as just the delivery platform for the pizza content, and as such should be kept to a minimum. Thousands of one-off pizza places serve millions of pizzas year in and year out. Dominos is a failure because they don't understand the market, they failed to do simple research, problem lies at the very top of the company.

You could have also told that Finland has won multiple championships with their pizzas around the world. Also the fact, that immigrant pizzerias are continuously breaking labor laws and pump down the prices is big factor. Domino´s is pretty unknown brand so they should open up only one place and make their brand more known in region. Also they should try premium market and not trying to capitalize already oversupplied cheap pizza sales market.

Ok this it OT, but i can't believe living the same way in USA would be quote on quote cheaper than in Finland, i.e the land tax or w/e that's called in English, is wayy too high if you own a house and most rental places in the states, are way too high compared to Finland, obviously changes from person to person, depending if you make your own foods etc, so a bit though of an statement to make, but still a somewhat fair point.

The problem was they didn’t flush the market with enough ads and tv ads. Im Norwegian and i ordered from Domino’s but many i met didn’t now it had arrived in Norway 🇳🇴 so i think they really needed to market much more. We love American style pizza as the chain peppes pizza suggests. But i must say dominos was way lover quality than that chain and in Norway i pay for quality not for dominos. So that may also be the reason Pizza Hut Express is actually doing very well in the Airport in Norway, so why they don’t expand i have no idea of because that pizza is delicious. We love Pizza as you se with frozen pizza so we welcome all fast food chains, but you need to advertise with local celebrities to establish trust in the business. More dots on the dice - better quality. Domino´s logo looks like two dice next to each other. One with one dot and the other with two. It just looks like they gotten a terrible rating.
