Gonna dislike this for saying that oral history isnt history. Oral history is flawed but it's an important source (especially in cultures where writing is either not invented or not used much). John Tosh wrote about this in his Pursuit of History.

Oral history is extremely unreliable because stories easily change. If you ever have played the game telephone in elementary school you know how quickly stories change when one person tells it to another person.

Reminds me of the fanciful story of the establishment of the British colony of Barbados (and the "Caribee islands") regarding the Spanish and Portuguese founding. The book "Spanish Main" uses a map which sloppy enough appears to be the Cape Verde Islands across the Atlantic as a source. Then the Barbados version says the Portuguese couldn't speak their own language and named the place "Los" Barbudos and appears to get more fanciful talking about wild animals left upon Barbados for meat.

I would like to believe the race in some form was real, simply because it is indeed a fun and cutesy story, the impression I get from this is not that the Race itself definitely, conclusively never happened at all, but that the documentation about it was spotty and inconsistent. The discrepency between "Just over 23 Hours" and "23 Hours, 37 Minutes" isn't a big enough gap for me to use that to discredit it, and maybe Mrs. Comstock just picked a few words wrong (nearly 300 years as opposed to 200) and inadvertently confused the timeline.
