Hey great video but just wanted to say that a fibre can be single mode over multiple wavelengths. A single wavelength can also comprise of multiple modes because the effective refractive index of the material is different (gets lower for the higher order modes) and so can produce different propagation constants for the same wavenumber :) Just wanted to add that, I am a big fan of the channel!

We have super cheap fiber here in India so I hopped on the bandwagon and got fiber for the house. The guys who installed it just left the Termination box on one end of the floor some three or four years ago. The cables are REALLY fragile, I've had to replace them more than twice because my over-curious dog just runs up the box and moves it around with his paws. I finally got fed up and got it mounted on the wall.

i was a fiber installer and the way i usually join two long runs of cable was to splice them by heating the ends until they melt and fuse together to avoid coupling loss. in this example it is probably fine. at one point, i was tasked to terminate these fibers, over400 of them, manually with loctite and 3 grades of grit paper and a blade to nick the glass. u can imagine the number of times these glass shard pricked my fingers. the 2 field engineers i worked with in that project, both had eye cataracts and they warned me never to look down straight into these fibers. when in operation, those lights are invisible but on the long run, the damage has already been done. one trick i use is to grab my phone, switch on my camera and use that to see if there is connectivity. much safer than using the eye, unless youre very sure the other end is not LIVE. part of my toolkit at that time was an optical microscope that i use to manually verify the end bits are clean and free from dust i used the same camera phone trick to verify a cable is not LIVE before sticking one of these into the microscope and into my eye.

Very bold of you to think my home has no fibre. I've run it throughout my house and link it up using a media converter that converts fiber to copper at my device ends. Working in a datacenter, I use fibre every day, run it, remove it, etc... Still, your handling of the fibre's make me cringe sometimes because they break extremely easy. The glass inside is as thin as a piece of hair. Stepping on it, bending it too tightly, or just dropping it could cause it to break or degrade.

"This looks nothing like the network cable in your house" Actually, that looks *exactly* like the network cable in my house. For 10 Gig runs between switches and servers, fiber is often significantly cheaper. Copper 10 Gbps switches are often several times more expensive than SFP models and copper SFPs are no joke in the price department either. In my apartment, Twinax DACs win, but for a home, fiber really is the most logical option.

Really needs to correct that MMF (Multimode Fibre) at 4:55 can only do 100m, that's not accurate as it really depends on speed and cable type. OM5 can do 100 Gbps at 150m and 10G at 400m. Saying it's only good for about 100m is misleading.
