iMovie Tutorial for Mac: Pro-Level Editing Using Precision Editor

Michael Kinney

In this tutorial, I show you a few professional video-editing techniques using iMovie’s Precision Editor.
iMovie may seem like barebones, amateur video-editing software. But, it actually has features you’d find in more sophisticated, professional video-editing applications. One of those features is the Precision Editor. As the name suggests, the Precision Editor helps you make more precise edits. But it also allows you to use more professional-level editing techniques in your videos.

The Precision Editor makes iMovie a way more capable video editor than it looks. What do you think of the Precision Editor feature? How will you use it in your videos?

Great tutorial. You are thorough, knowledgeable and you explain things in a way that is easy to digest for beginners and pros alike. I've watched several dozen iMovie tutorials this past couple weeks to teach myself video editing with this software, and this is the FIRST tutorial I've seen that has even mentioned this feature exists! Truly grateful for the knowledge you've shared. Instant Subscriber!

I'm usually using iMovie to make videos for my students (dance & yoga)... and always was struggling with the overlaps & didn't take time to go into to the precision editor... this video helps me a lot!!!!!!! one question: mostly I'm using the title „ticker” to make my explanation during the exercises. but how can I make the running tempo of the text precisely???!!! You know a possibility to make this numerously (without only moving the bars) to have a precise result?

No fancy intro graphics. I only shoot video for fun but still enjoy learning the skills involved. I've subscribed to learn everything you have taken the trouble to teach. Thank you.

I Michael. Toward the end of the video, you "smooth the edit" by fading out the audio. You add a couple of key frames to the audio level. My question is. How do you get rid of those key frames and get the audio back to what it was before you faded it? Thank you for the help.

Right-click or Control-click on a keyframe and select Delete Keyframe. An alternative to using keyframes to fade out the audio in that situation is to grab the fade handle on the right edge of the audio clip and drag it left.
