Hi Anjeanette Boquiren, yes, a traditional haiku is 5-7-5. The one shown was written by the creator of the haiku in the 1500s and is 5-7-5 in Japanese language. When haikus are translated into other languages, translators often need to make a choice between meaning and syllable count, since it is near impossible to translate haikus and keep the exact meaning in a 5-7-5 syllable count. For the example I show in this video, the translator chose meaning over syllables. Another translator of the same poem prioritized syllable count over meaning, resulting in this version that is 5-7-5: The falling flower I saw drift back to the branch Was a butterfly. I might stick a note about this into the video. Thank you for asking about this!

Good mam But i am little confused You told 4 genres. How can you separate drama and poetry from fiction and non fiction. I mean poetry and drama also should be the sub genre of fiction.. May be i'm wrong but i'm confused Kindly brief me.

    1. English Units
      English Units
      Mánuði síðan

Hi Irfan, that's a good question! The genres and subgenres all overlap. Each genre has one or two key traits that are considered before all other traits. If the writing has that key trait, it will fall under a certain genre--even though it might have traits of other genres as well. Here's an example. All dramas will either be fiction (example: a story the author imagined) or nonfiction (example: a story that actually happened in real life) or a combination of both. But there is a key trait that makes a piece of writing a drama--whether it is fiction or nonfiction...That key trait is dialogue. If the story is told through dialogue, that trait makes it a drama. Poetry's key trait is that the language is written in a non-standard way (ie, with rhyme, incomplete sentences, not using paragraphs but stanzas or pairs instead, etc). If a piece of writing has that trait, the genre is poetry, even if the poem is also fiction or nonfiction.

      3 mánuðum síðan

Hi Rain 555211, here are two main differences between an epic and a novel: 1) An epic is a long poem, but a novel is a long story that is NOT a poem. 2) An epic is specifically about a hero's journey and heroic deeds, but a novel can be about many things--including a hero. Another point is that a novel can be a mystery, thriller, romance, etc. But an epic is a poem (not a mystery, thriller, etc) and usually one from history (like the Odyssey or Epic of Gilgamesh).

    1. English Units
      English Units
      8 mánuðum síðan

Thank you, Mohammed! News writing is journalism involving writing periodicals (like newspapers, magazines, and journals)--so it falls under non-fiction. Content writing is basically website or webpage writing, so some content writing on websites can include news writing, but a lot of content writing is not news but is other types of information about products. Technical writing is a specific type of writing that gives instructions and descriptions about using electronics and computer programs--so it is different from news writing.
